JEWISH HISTORY IN BELGRADE

The settlement of Jews in the area of Belgade began back in 1521 - the year when the Ottomans conquered Belgrade. We associate the settlement of Sephardic Jews with the 16th century, while the Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Belgrade during the 18th century. Their number gradually increased during the 19th and first half of 20th century. During the 16th century, several Jewish Communities and synagogue were mentioned in Belgrade. Sephardic Municipality- the first Jewish Community in Belgrade, was founded in 1886., under the name "Religious school Jewish Community". The municipality of Ashkenazi in Belgrade was founded in 1866. With the acquisition of Serbian independence, the life of Jews improved significantly. Jews were given all civil rights at the Berlin Congress.

ASHKENAZIC AND SEPHARDIC JEWS

Belgrade is one of the few European cities where lived Jews of Spanish origin- Sephardic Jews and Jews from Eastern Europe- Ashkenazi Jews.

THE HOLOCAUST IN BELGRADE

90% of the Jewish population was killed in occupied Belgrade during the Second World War.
